About Us

History
The Northwest Council on Climate Change was created in November 1996 after a presentation by the Hon. Timothy Wirth, the United States Undersecretary of State for Global Affairs at an event sponsored by the Climate Action Network (CAN)
www.igc.apc.org/climate/AboutCAN.html at the University of Washington in Seattle.

The Co-Founders were Blair Henry, a Seattle business attorney and mediator, Dr. Richard Gammon, a Professor of Atmospheric Sciences, Chemistry and Oceanography at the University of Washington, and Jack Cullen, and engineer with the Washington State Department of Natural Resources.

Dozens of exploratory, bi-weekly dinner meetings were held in Seattle.  Key attendees included the Honorable Margaret Pageler, President, Seattle City Council, the Honorable Jay Inslee, Member of Congress, The Honorable Karen Fraser, Washington State Senate, The Honorable Jennifer Belcher, Washington State Commissioner of Public Lands, Bill Nye "The Science Guy", Denis Hayes, Bullitt Foundation, as well as many of our local, nationally recognized scientists including Drs. Ed Miles, Conway Leovy, Ed Sarachik and Bob Fleagle.

Within six months, Dr. Miles was asked by The White House to host one the country's first regional White House Conferences on Climate Change in 1997 pursuant to Congressional mandate.  Dr. Miles sought the assistance of The Northwest Council on Climate Change.  From there The Council has participated in no less than:
